From August 22 to 30, Farnam Select All-Around Amateur contenders competed in a variety of events throughout AQHA’s 2014 Adequan Select World Championship Show in Amarillo. The Adequan Select World is the pinnacle event for amateur exhibitors 50 and older from around the world, who must qualify to compete in classes representing halter, English and western disciplines.

This year, 69 contenders competed for the Farnam Select All-Around Amateur award, which is presented to the horse-and-rider team who earn the most points during the show.

For the second year in a row, the Farnam Select All-Around Amateur is Linda Coakley of Clearlake, Washington. Linda showed Patsys Royal Secret, a 2000 brown gelding. Patsys Royal Secret, who is by Make My Grey and out of Patsys Chic, was bred by Patricia Sowell of Sacramento, California. Linda and Patsys Royal Secret earned 49 points in three classes, winning reserve world champion titles in showmanship, horsemanship and hunt seat equitation.

My horse rushes jumps. How do I stop him from doing this? I have tried half-halting, stopping in front of the jump and talking to him, but nothing helps.

As you realize, the very nature of jumping a horse requires a greater emphasis on safety than other aspects of riding. I have heard some people comment that when a horse rushes a fence it is because he likes to jump, but this certainly is not true. It is part of the “fight or flight” response of a frightened horse.
